A MAN from Shepton Mallet who was caught by police with some cannabis told a court that it was the lesser of two evils as when he drank alcohol it got him into trouble.
Peter Daniel Hurd appeared in the dock before District Judge Lynne Matthews, sitting at Yeovil and pleaded guilty to being in possession of a quantity of cannabis on August 8.
Prosecutor Emma Chetland said that the 22-year-old defendant, of Meadow Road, Shepton, was seen by police driving his car in Priddy when he was pulled over.
"They carried out a search and discovered 0.1g of flowering cannabis tips which were found within a grinder and he admitted the offence during interview," she said.
Hurd told the court that the cannabis had been for his own personal use as he smoked the drug on occasion.
"I smoke cannabis as it makes me relax, instead of drinking alcohol which makes me cause mischief," he said.
He was fined £60 and ordered to pay £85 costs and a £20 victim surcharge. A destruction order was also made for the cannabis and grinder.
