Somerset were last night exploring the possibility of Nick Compton featuring against Yorkshire at Taunton – after the opening day of their LV= County Championship match was abandoned without a ball being bowled.
Day one of the Division One match at the County Ground was due to start at the later than usual time of 12pm, as Yorkshire had been involved in a YB40 game at Middlesex until Sunday evening. But rain fell constantly throughout the day and play was eventually called off by umpires Nick Cook and Martin Saggers shortly after 4pm.
Neither side has yet named their XI for the match, so Somerset could – in theory – bring England opener Compton into their side. That, however, depends on two key factors: the England management allowing the 29-year-old to feature, and the chest injury that kept him out of the field at Headingley yesterday not proving too serious.
Compton is hungry for runs, after averaging 9.75 in England's 2-0 series win over New Zealand. On his last first-class appearance for Somerset at Taunton – against Warwickshire last month – he scored 52 and 105 not out.
Somerset, without a host of players through injury and unavailability, may also consider giving seam bowler Gemaal Hussain his first Championship outing since last August.
