Ladies from Wedmore Golf Club took to the course in unusual attire last week to raise money for Bust, the breast cancer unit at Southmead Hospital.

On top of the usual golfing competition, there was also a prize on offer for the best decorated bra – which had to be worn over the entrants' clothes.

Jenny Thomas took first place and Joan Peck second as the event, organised by captain Diedre Wheadon, raised £95.

Thomas was not impeded by her extra clothing out on the course as she won the competition alongside Eunice Bond and Nan Watt, with a score of 71 points.

Runners-up Sue Tarry, Nesta Hathaway and Ruth Pearson finished three behind, edging out Jan Jenkins, Judy Cutter and Joan Peck on countback.

Wedmore's Seniors Open also took place last week, with visiting players making up more than half of the nearly 100 entrants.

In wet conditions, the best score of the day came from Wedmore's Ian Robson, who scored 39 points to win the Butcombe Trophy by two clear shots.

Stuart Meyrick from Clevedon took the visitors' prize with 37 points, while another visitor, H Eden from Folke, took the over-70s prize with 35 points.

All the divisional winners were home players but visiting competitors were well represented in the prizes.

John Russell won Division 1 ahead of Bill Black (Minehead) and Martin Wilks (Rodway Hill), Mike Munns (37) won Division 2 from Brian Kidd and Jim Weaver (Cotswold Edge) and Derek Osborn took the honours in Division 3, with Richard Saunders second and Peter Gibbs of Clevedon third.

On Saturday, Wedmore B recorded an excellent Avalon League result against Wheathill, winning all five matches.
