A teenager from Crewkerne was presented with an award by Sir David Attenborough. Abbie Barnes was given the award by the well-known natural history film-maker after winning a film competition called EcoTales. The Crewkerne student created a film called 'Save our Oceans, Recycle your Plastic'. She enlisted the help of volunteers to clean-up Lilstock beach, near Minehead, as part of an eco-mission to raise awareness about the effects of ocean littering. Abbie lives in Crewkerne and attends Richard Huish College in Taunton. She studies environmental Science, archaeology, biology and geography. Abbie said: "Sir David Attenborough is such a great guy and we got to chat for a bit at the end of the presentation. "It really was an amazing day and I am still buzzing now. The whole festival was simply fantastic. Such a wonderful day." BBC wildlife presenter and competition judge Michaela Strachan said: "Abbie has done a fab job at getting the message across about the damage plastics can do to our oceans. "The film is really nicely edited and Abbie has used a great variety of shots to illustrate her points. "It's a really well-made film and it's great to see that Abbie also managed to motivate other people to get involved and make a difference by doing a beach-clean up. "I'm really impressed that she also thought of interviewing an expert from the Wildlife Living Seas. "I almost thought I was watching a Countyfile piece. Sign her up!" Abbie would like to become a wildlife conservationist and natural history film maker. She recently came second in the 2013 International Action For Nature eco-hero's awards in the over 13s category. These awards recognise and reward individual environmental initiatives of young people aged 8 - 16.
