Work on the much-anticipated 525-home CLR development in Crewkerne could begin as soon as October and residents will soon have the opportunity to help shape it.
Developer Taylor Wimpey is holding a public consultation in the Victoria Hall on Market Street on Wednesday April 24 where residents can have their say on the plans for the site on Easthams.
The greenfield site is located to the east of Crewkerne between the A30 to Yeovil and the A356 to Dorchester.
The site will be a mixed development of houses, office or factory space, a primary school, community facilities, playing fields, parkland and associated infrastructure including a link road and road improvements.
Harry Sedman from Origin3 said: "Assuming we can get the necessary approvals, we would like to start initial works on the A30 - clearing verges on the road and cutting to create access to the site - hopefully in October.
"Taylor Wimpey are committed to the development and want to deliver it. The last few years have been very difficult due to market conditions.
"They are keen to start work and are starting to look at detailed design, what the houses will look like and that sort of thing.
"Taylor Wimpey are due to submit an application for detailed plans of the first homes at the end of this month or in early May. They are keen to get feedback and are keen for people to help us and influence the design.
"Taylor Wimpey are a mass house builder with usually a set way of doing things but they are moving away from their standard product to deliver something a bit better."
A spokesman for Taylor Wimpey said: "We always try to keep local communities informed as we prepare and then make our planning applications.
"We really welcome any comments that you may have at this stage."
Taylor Wimpey has agreed to have the link road fully completed within four years of the occupation of the first house. The developer will not be allowed to have more than 199 dwellings occupied unless the link road is provided.
