Outline plans for 78 homes and a new access road to be built at Avishayes Road in Chard have been approved but the design layout will have to be changed before full approval is granted.
The application was up for discussion at Wednesday's South Somerset District Council meeting.
There have been 27 letters of objection received by the council from residents.
The plans propose building a new access road to the area, which is near Chard Reservoir and Nature Reserve.Many residents feel this could have a harmful effect on the reserve.
Councillors granted outline permission for the application but because they did not like the layout of the proposed houses, the developers need to come up with a new layout design.
