A contractor working at Downside Abbey had to be rescued by firefighters after becoming injured while he was working on scaffolding. Emergency services were called in after the 22-year-old working high up on the scaffolding injured his knee and was unable to get down. A spokesman for South Western Ambulance Service said they were called shortly after 8.15am to the address in Fosse Way, Stratton-on-the-Fosse. "The patient had a leg injury, which was not life-changing but proving challenging to treat as he was on scaffolding," said the spokesman. "Firefighters assisted and at about 10.50am he was taken to Shepton Mallet Community Hospital for treatment." A Devon & Somerset Fire & Rescue Service spokesman confirmed they had to use specialist equipment to assist the ambulance service. "Local appliances, the specialist rescue team and an aerial ladder platform were mobilised to the incident to assist the ambulance service," he said. "Crews found a casualty suffering a knee injury up on scaffolding. The firefighters, trained to deal with rescuing people at height, got to work making access for the aerial ladder platform. "The casualty was rescued from height using the aerial ladder platform - whilst the specialist rescue team stood by as a precaution. The patient was left in the hands of the ambulance service." Scaffolding is up at Downside Abbey as part of a £4 million project ito make sure it is looking its very best for its bicentenary. The roof of the neo-Gothic style abbey is being repaired and scaffolding has been installed while the work takes place.
