Hornets U16 10 Yatton & Cheddar U16 29

Yatton & Cheddar emerged as worthy winners from a fast and furious match at Hornets.

There was no advantage to either side until ten minutes in when Cheddar broke and the ball found its way to Ben Hutton, who sprinted diagonally across the field to open the scoring with an unconverted try.

From the restart, the visitors took command again and it was not long before Jesse Chapman increased the lead after a scorching run.

Shortly afterwards, an injury to a Hornets winger meant they were reduced to 14 players and Cheddar sportingly removed a player to even up the sides.

Although the hosts were strong in the pack, Cheddar remained resilient in defence and Chapman scored twice again before half-time, the first of which was converted by Jack Edwards.

Hornets started the second half strongly, catching the visitors on the back foot and scoring an unconverted try in the first minutes

Cheddar responded immediately and, from the restart, worked their way back into Hornets territory. A well- worked maul saw the ball moved to Jack Edwards, who ran in a superb try after avoiding several tackles. He also converted.

Hornets worked hard and managed to score a deserved try but by then it was too late to mount a comeback.

Wells U15 12 Chippenham U15 5

Wells lifted the Bristol Combination Plate with victory over Chippenham, avenging the defeat they suffered to the same opposition at under-13 level.

Chippenham put Wells under early pressure but the defence stood firm. As the half continued, the game flowed from end to end but neither side could find a way through and half-time arrived with the scoreline blank.

Wells made changes after the break, with Josh having to retire with a nasty gash to his leg, and they started the fresher but kicked wide when awarded a penalty.

The deadlock remained until midway through the half when Matt T capitalised on the first missed tackle of the day to run in an unconverted try.

With the game still on a knife-edge, Chippenham tried to battle back but Wells stood firm again and Sam G touched down in the far corner for a breakaway score. Harry slotted the conversion perfectly.

With time running out, Chippenham needed two converted tries to win and, although they did all they could to claw the game back, they were only rewarded with a single touchdown.

From the restart, Chippenham caught the ball cleanly but were driven out of play by Wells to seal the victory.

Cheddar Valley U7 v Burnham U7

Cheddar had the better of a local derby against Burnham, remaining unbeaten throughout the morning.

Playing five matches in total, it was end-to-end action from the outset, with both sides making good use of the space and playing some good running rugby.

The first match ended in a 8-8 draw thanks to a hatful of tries from Benjamin and Jimmy. In game two, Cheddar narrowly sneaked ahead with some excellent teamwork between Reef, Ali and Matthew, leading to a narrow 10-6 victory.

The visitors then started to show their pedigree with some exceptional running from Tommy and Chloe, and more tries from Benjamin led Cheddar to a 9-4 win.

The next two games were equally close with some fantastic running rugby and great support play from both sides resulting in a close-run 12-11 win to Cheddar, who pulled away in the final match of the morning to triumph 9-4.

Player of the match: Reef.

Tor RFC

Tor RFC are looking for more youngsters to join the club's minis section, who train on Sunday mornings from 10.30am until 12 noon.

Boys and girls, from reception to Year 6 are welcome to attend. No experience is necessary, just enthusiasm and a willingness to participate.

"Tor is a friendly club and all new players are made very welcome," said junior chairman John Sturgess.

"The emphasis is more on training, having fun and enjoyment at this stage, with matches to be arranged when the club feel the children are ready."

Parents are requested to stay at the club, where teas and coffees are available while their children are training.
