The Tor Woods footpath in Wells has become "totally unusable" according to residents who are fed-up with waiting for it to be fixed.

The surface of the path has deteriorated so much that merely walking along it has become a challenge.

During the recent bad weather the path suffered serious flooding.

Phil Weston, who regularly uses the path, has been frustrated by the lack of action to surface the path in a way that will not wash away in heavy rain.

Mr Weston said: "About three years ago a cycle track was laid and a week later there was a huge downpour and the path washed away.

"It has been like it ever since."

Matt Tew, of Bath Road, Wells, said he used to walk to town with his young son most weekends along the path but could not now as it is too dangerous.

He said: "We pay good money in council tax to live in Wells. Surely to sort this out isn't asking for the world."

A Mendip District Council spokesperson said: "We understand the frustration caused by the current state of the Tor Woods pathway to local residents and users, much of which has been caused by the recent heavy rain.

"The council is currently working closely with Somerset County Council to develop a sustainable maintenance approach for the pathway's future.

"We believe that this future plan will help develop the pathway and ensure that it stays usable and safe for the ongoing future."

Mr Weston was not impressed.

He said: "The statement from Mendip just sounds like a typical statement you get from a official department that does not have an answer to the question.

"What I want to know is what are they going to do about it and when.

"I have walked that path nearly every day for the last ten years and have never seen it in such a mess as it is now.

"It used to get a bit muddy, but now it is totally unusable, it is a accident waiting to happen."
