Professor Mick Aston, former presenter for BBC's Time Team, has signed a petition backing the £1.7 million bid to redevelop Glastonbury's Somerset Rural Life Museum.

Thousands of people across the county have already signed their names to the lasting legacy in support of the museum's redevelopment.

After signing the banner this Wednesday (12 December), Mick made a rousing statement urging others to support the museum's plans:

"Now that the forces of darkness and evil are striking the land again, we must do everything we can to support local heritage projects like this." He said.

"We must ask ourselves who is going to help pay for projects like this that aren't a necessity but are still a huge part of the local community.

He added: "We need to make more of places such as the Rural Life Museum and not just sit back, but pressure authorities like the county council to support more of these sorts of projects.

"I love this museum and have done projects of my own here, it's a brilliant place and should be developed further and further."

Mick, a respected academic, lives in Sandford near Cheddar and is best known for his wild hair, vibrant stripy jumpers and for bringing the fascinating world of archaeology into our homes via the BBC series Time Team.

Last February however, it was reported that Mick quit Time Team after heated rows with BBC bosses over 'dumbing down' issues.

The banner signed by Mick and others across the county is part of Somerset County Council's campaign to secure funds from the Heritage Lottery Fund. If secured, the funds would help restore the museum and the Abbey Barn.

A spokesperson for Somerset County Council said: "To raise the profile of the bid we are asking people from across the county to sign the banner to show their support. "

"Every signature will help support the bid so please add yours to the banner at Somerset Rural Life Museum or sign online as this is a very worthy project."
