National Grid failed to give enough information for civic leaders to judge whether the draft route for a new high voltage power line through Somerset is the best option, a council will be told. But one thing is clear Sedgemoor councillors will be told today, the impact of the 400,000 volt overhead transmission line on the villages of Mark and Tarnock would be so severe that putting the cables underground should be considered. A special meeting of Sedgemoor District Council opens at 2.30pm in Bridgwater to consider the council's response to the draft route. The cables will take power from the proposed new Hinkley C nuclear power station to Avonmouth. Many have called for the line to be buried underground for its entire route to protect the environment in an area dependent on tourism. National Grid has ruled out such a scheme on cost grounds.
