A military charity is appealing to local tradesmen for help in setting up a unique facility near Glastonbury for war heroes.
Afghan Heroes supports British soldiers on the front line and their families on the home front and has recently signed a lease on an Ashcott building. Their aim is to create the first in a series of self-financing care and rehabilitation centres, known as 'The Retreat'.
The Retreat will serve up to half a dozen former service personnel as they adapt to life after the front line.
The building, however, is in desperate need of refurbishment and the charity is appealing to local bricklayers, carpenters, electricians and tradesmen to come forward and help transform the site.
Denise Harris, who founded Afghan Heroes after her son, Corporal Lee Scott, lost his life in 2009 while serving with the Second Royal Tank Regiment in Afghanistan, said the charity's aim is to set up a dozen Retreats for soldiers across the UK.
She said: "It is a fantastic building but needs considerable refurbishment to create the high grade accommodation required and this is where local tradesman can make a difference by donating a few hours of their time.
"The more money we can save from the refurbishment programme means more money where we need it the most," she added, "providing the specialist support and facilities former services personnel need in an environment they can cope with and which understands their particular needs."
The flagship Retreat premise is a substantial detached two-story building with five bedrooms that will be used by former services personnel; however it needs a lot of work.
Keen to get the project up and running, the charity is hoping that local tradesmen will get in touch and donate their time and skills to this project.
Denise said: "The building will need some work before we can accommodate former service people and local tradesman can really make a different by helping us get this important project off the ground."
"Each Retreat will act as a stepping stone between military and civilian life, supporting personnel on the often traumatic transition between the two worlds."
