Mystery surrounds the theft of a crop of carrots from a garden in Highbury Street, Coleford.
The incident took place overnight between Wednesday, August 7 and Thursday, August 8.
The 89-year-old owner of the carrots woke up to discover his back gate, which leads onto a football field, wide open and the carrots gone.
A police spokeswoman said: "A crop of carrots suggests that quite a few have been stolen but we have no idea why, other than for consumption.
"There has been a spate of petty thefts in the area recently and we are increasing our patrols and have offered crime prevention advice."
Anyone who can shed some light on the theft is asked to contact police on 101.
