JIM and Eileen Govier were taken completely by surprise by friends in Pilton at a village party last week.

The party was organised to thank the couple for all the years of hard work they had put into Pilton Working Men's Club.

The couple said: "We were both overwhelmed, it was the best kept secret in Pilton.

"We would like to thank everyone involved for the party, present and cake."

Jim was involved with the club for 52 years, including being the chairman for 30 years, and Eileen became the secretary of the club in 1983. Both of them held those posts until last year. The club has been a huge part of the couple's life and they admit they went there on their first date.

Jim met Eileen when they were taking part in a whist drive on December 13, 1968, and his winning hand meant he had Eileen as an opponent in the next game.

"He won me on the turn of a card," joked Eileen.

She added: "We would both like to thank Brian for all his hard work in the coming together of the club and the village hall and creating The Old Pilton Working Men's Club and Village Hall charity."

The day-to-day running of the establishment is now run by Pilton Working Men's Club.

"We also thank the old committee for our Dartington Crystal pint glass and vase," they said.

The club was formed in January 1893 in the rooms that are now known as the village hall.

The club continued in the same building until 2003 when it moved into the modernised premises which were paid for by Glastonbury Festival Ltd.

Last year the village hall and the working men's club came together and are now a charity.

An event celebrating ten years of the club being in its current building will be held on August 25 with live music and entertainment.
