RESIDENTS have called for action to stop people speeding down their Yeovil street "before someone is killed". Shaun Bown, 51, of Athelney Way, said his wall has been destroyed twice after crashes caused by motorists driving too fast along Stourton Way. The most recent incident happened on Tuesday, June 11. Mr Bown claimed he was awoken shortly after 6.30am by a loud bang when a car collided with the brick wall outside his home. He said the incident was captured on CCTV which he had installed last year but police have not yet looked at it. Mr Bown said he cannot understand why officers are not prosecuting the driver. He said: "What annoyed me the most wasn't the lad who hit the wall, it was the policeman's attitude. "He was looking at his watch and said, 'it's 7.10am, I should have been at home by now'. "My wife told him we had CCTV but he didn't want to know. I haven't heard anything since the day it happened. "In the past two years, there have been six quite serious accidents within 100 yards of our house. If this had happened two hours later, when mothers are walking their kids to school, he could have killed someone." Catherine Foster, of Avon and Somerset Constabulary, said police would not be taking any further action against the motorist. She said: "We attended the scene of this incident and the insurance details were exchanged by the two parties. "No criminal action will be taken against the driver and this is now a civil matter. "Residents in the local area have expressed concerns about speeding and the local beat team are working to address these with the local council. "One option would be for local residents to join the Community Speedwatch scheme which has been very successful in other areas." Kasey Rendell, 44, who lives opposite Mr Bown, echoed her neighbour's concerns. She said: "I live on the corner and a few years ago a girl came up on the kerb and landed right by my living room window. "My chair used to be by the window but I've moved it now and put the TV there instead, as it is not safe. "People drive too fast. Something has to be done because eventually someone will be killed." A Speed Indicator Device is being fitted to a lamppost on Stourton Way for two weeks from Monday, August 26. Data will be collected 24 hours a day and used to determine whether a device should be installed permanently. A spokesman for Somerset County Council said: "If the SID shows there are vehicles frequently speeding in that area the data will be passed to the police, only they can enforce the speed limit. "Anyone who thinks an area would benefit from traffic calming measures should approach their local county councillor and ask them submit a request to our small improvement scheme."
