THE MOTHER of a six-year-old girl who collapsed in a Frome school playground has praised teachers for their quick thinking.
Emily Fuller fell ill while playing with friends at Hayesdown First School last Wednesday.
She was sick and then collapsed before being carried into the school where an ambulance was called.
Her mother Donna Haberfield was alerted at Norton St Philip School where she is a dinner lady.
Emily's father Vince Fuller, who was working in Southampton, was also contacted along with her grandmother Val Haberfield.
By the time her mother arrived at the school, Emily's temperature had soared, she was unable to walk and was extremely groggy.
Because of the seriousness of her condition she was airlifted to Bath's Royal United Hospital, where following tests it was found that Emily had a double ear infection and she was kept in hospital overnight to monitor her condition.
However, she was back at home the following day and on Monday went with her sister nine-year-old Sky to enjoy the final two days of term before the summer holidays.
Mrs Haberfield said: "We are all very relieved that Emily is OK. The whole thing was extremely scary, especially when I arrived at the school and she was obviously not at all well.
"However, the head teacher, Sue Heal, and the other teachers were absolutely brilliant, not only with Emily when they realised something was seriously wrong but they made sure that her big sister Sky was reassured because obviously she was really worried to."
Doctors believe the ear infection was the reason for Emily's collapse but she will be returning to the hospital for further tests.
Her mother added: "We are all so relieved. Emily is normally such a bouncy little girl, she is our little star."
