Having a great time, despite weather

Compton Dundon and Littleton WI

WE had no meeting in June due to the refurbishment of the kitchens at Meadway Hall, in Compton Dundon.

Since that time several members braved the vagaries of the supposedly English summer weather, attended the garden party held at the home of Ann Mumford. We sallied forth in posh frocks but soon descended into anoraks and hoodies with rugs around our knees while we ate our picnic lunch. Only the English... however despite everything we enjoyed our morning out and at least had a laugh.

Skittles: We played the new WI Middlezoy and were fortunate to win, the refreshments were amazing and had a very congenial evening. The next match will be at the Street Inn with opponents Ashcott.

Janet gave a very amusing account of attending the 70th birthday party at Woolavington WI, feeling rather like Billy-no-mates as they always seemed to sit at the wrong table, and were moved around several times, but, with the two of them ending up on their own they benefited from lots of Bucks Fizz, wine and food which was very good. No offence taken, Woolavington.

Angela welcomed two guests, Bridget from Germany and ex member Pat Green home on holiday from Canada; other very welcome guests were members of Bucklers Mead WI.

The feature of the evening was a display of clog dancing by the Appalachian Dance Group. The ladies were accompanied by one gentleman playing the guitar and a lady violinist. The energy output was phenomenal especially on one of the hottest nights of the year. One of the dances was performed without any musical accompaniment in order to emphasise the variety of sounds which can be achieved wearing irons on the feet. After liquid refreshments and food the team members persuaded some of the audience to take part and the star of the evening was our guest, Bridget.

Following this, our little drama group gave their version of Four Girls Bright and Beautiful, which was enthusiastically received despite a few little blips en route.

There is a possibility of some free IT training in the future, Sally urged everyone to attend the ACWW day on August 7. The proposed tree planting ceremony has been postponed until more suitable conditions prevail.

It is hoped to enter several teams for the forthcoming County Quiz evening.

Dates to remember: The Flower Show at Meadway Hall will be on August 10, when the competition for the WI Shield is "Five Easter Biscuits", entries to Trish Cox no later than August 8.

The Village Family Evening Fish and Chips at 5.30pm with Mums and Toddlers Group, followed by a Beetle Drive, will be on Wednesday, August 14.

It is with sadness I report that due to lack of interest and support our annual Harvest Supper and Sale, previously held at our September meeting, will not take place. The speaker at this meeting will be Anne Hassed, subject Autumn Arrangements. There will be bring-and-buy and cake stalls. The competition is for a Harvest Arrangement.

The competition for "a dancer in any medium" was won by Patricia Heap followed by Sali Money and Mary Burt. The flower of the month was Sweet Peas from Patricia Heap's garden.
