THE Somerset Standard has joined forces with Spering Court Animal Rescue Centre in Buckland Down to help rehome some of its rescue animals.

The centre is run by Roy Steggles and his wife Linda.

Mr Steggles gave up his 23-year career as a lorry driver 12 years ago to train in animal care and now, along with Linda and his son and daughter-in-law, runs the centre, which has many animals that need rehoming.

Just some of the animals include a European eagle owl, two barn owl chicks, ferrets, lambs, sheep and a llama.

The centre receives no funding and mainly relies on donations of food and funds.

Mr Steggles, who is in his 60s and pays himself no wage, works seven days a week looking after the animals.

The first animal we are featuring this week is a Bengalese eagle owl called BJ.

Mr Steggles said BJ is five years old and came from an owl sanctuary in Preston that was closing down.

He will need to go to a home that is experienced in birds of prey.

He eats mice and rats and as he is a captive bird, he has not been flown that much.

Mr Steggles said: "BJ needs someone who is used to handling birds of prey, he has had a lot of upheaval over the past year but he has a pleasant nature and sits nicely.

"He will need a secure pen or enclosure with the ability for flight."

Mr Steggles said all homes are vetted before an animal is rehomed.

And repeat checks take place to make sure everything is going OK.

The centre also has several horses and ponies, and Mr Steggles would like to encourage some volunteers to come along and help bring them on.

Mr Steggles said: "We would love to have some volunteers who know about animal husbandry and handling animals.

"We need help with mucking out and handling all the animals."

Other items the centre is in desperate need of is secondhand timber and building materials, to improve stabling and shelters, sand and gravel, horse blankets and rugs, dog cages and beds and cat baskets and beds.

Anyone who is interested in adopting BJ, helping out at the centre or donating items, should telephone Mr Steggles on 01373 812845.
