Four of the West's wildlife trusts – Somerset, Dorset, Wiltshire and Devon – have joined forces to apply for almost a million pounds of lottery funding to pay for a programme called Skills for the Future.
The project will diversify the conservation workforce, provide new careers for people from disadvantaged backgrounds and teach them skills from dry-stone walling and hedge-laying to forestry.
The four trusts intend to apply to the Heritage Lottery Fund for £829,000 for the project, and have just received £9,600 to work up the full bid.
