Shepton Mallet Gymnastics Club's Toby Ross won a bronze medal at the National School Tumbling Finals in Stoke-on-Trent. In his second year representing the South West at national level and having spent a year developing his strength, Ross' hard work with coach Clare Smith paid off as he finished in third place. "This is a massive achievement for Toby as he is only 11 years old," said Shepton head coach Smith, who travelled with Ross to the event. "Toby only has a limited number of hours to train but with his hard work and a great team of coaches at the club, he's managed a brilliant bronze." The next competition for the club will also be in Stoke-on-Trent – this time for the NDP National finals. Smith will be taking Ross and George Norman to the event after both won the South West title in their respective categories. Meanwhile, Smith was nominated as one of the county's top three coaches at the Somerset Sports Awards. The nomination, in the Performance Coach of the Year category, recognised her achievements and hard work for the club and local schools. Smith has spent years qualifying different gymnasts to national level, coaching several British medalists and Somerset squad members along the way. She also works closely with British Gymnastics in tutoring teachers and developing coaches. A club spokesperson said: "The club are very proud of their head coach and on behalf of all the gymnasts, coaches and parents, would like to congratulate her for a fantastic achievement." The club trains at Whitstone School on Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays. Visit www.sheptonmalletgymnasticsclub.co.uk for more information.
