Barrington 1st XI 156 Wells 1st XI 157-2 (Wells won by eight wickets)

Wells 1st XI secured a comprehensive victory over Barrington to get their season up and running.

Bowling first in warm conditions, Wells got off to a perfect start when Freddie Reed (1-17) found the edge of D Brains (5), with Dave Barber taking a sharp catch at slip.

However, the partnership of T Towill (32) and S Redwood (55) threatened to take the game away from Wells as they steadily accumulated runs.

Ollie Smart (2-30) made the breakthrough, bagging the vital wicket of Towill, but with only two wickets lost halfway through their innings, Barrington had laid a solid foundation to attack later.

Carl Thompson (1-20) and Alex Trevett (0-20) ensured this attack did not come and were unlucky not to bag further wickets.

The introduction of Ali Barrowman (4-14) then swung the game in Wells' favour with the wicket of Redwood and, in partnership with Craig Churches (2-32), they brought the innings to a sudden close, with the last five wickets falling for 15 runs.

Chasing 157 to win, Wells began cautiously as the ball swung aggressively, with Tony White (14) and Barber (33) setting out their stall to bat their side into a good position.

The loss of White to the dangerous Redwood (1-24) brought Churches to the crease and he set out to accelerate the innings. Barber hit Redwood out of the attack with a succession of boundaries but he then succumbed to the left-arm spin of T Pitman (1-23).

Jack Moore (26no) joined Churches (66no) and the duo dominated the Barrington attack. With a lightening outfield, Churches was dealing in boundaries and the finish line was in sight as he brought up his half-century.

Moore joined the party with some clean hitting and Wells sailed home in the 39th over to secure maximum points and their first victory of the season.

On Saturday, Wells host table-topping Huish & Langport at South Horrington (2pm).

Wells Swans defeated Witham Friary by six wickets thanks largely to an unbeaten half-century from Casper Bridson.

Wells won the toss and chose to field, with Ollie Smart and Ewan Goodland starting well as Goodland bowled Reed for 12.

The visitors managed to up the run-rate through D Heath (26) and P Wacey (28) but Connor Dors (4-12) ripped through the middle-order.

The visitors continued to accumulate the runs, with I McComas hitting 20 before being dismissed by Smart as Witham Friary were bowled out in 34 overs, setting Wells a target of 142.

The reply got off to a flying start, with both openers looking to score quickly, although they were back in the pavilion by the tenth over.

Hodgkinson added 23 quick runs before being out lbw to Gould. Brown (18) continued where the openers left off and was joined by Bridson, whose 67 not out took Wells over the winning line, ably assisted by Baker.

A Wells XI beat The Willows by 20 runs, despite a poor start to their innings as Poston dismissed Hodgkinson lbw.

This brought Moore to the crease and he shared an unbeaten partnership with Churches (51retd).

Moore eventually fell for 32 off the bowling of Rowley, caught on the boundary by Newman. Bridson and Wheeler finished off the innings as Wells set a total of 127 for The Willows to chase.

Wells managed to restrict The Willows from the start, with Smart (1-11) and Reed (0-9) bowling economically and forcing their opponents to attempt to up the run-rate through Bowen (32) and Clements (16).

Boot (37) managed to take the attack to the bowlers before being bowled by Smart and Willows eventually finished on 106 after Wheeler bowled Connock (16) with the final ball.
