Wells businesswoman's appeal on behalf of city's 'west end'

A Wells businesswoman believes that the west end of the city is neglected and that trade is suffering as a result.

Annabelle Spencer runs a grocery store on Tucker Street and made her case to the city centre management committee of Wells City Council.

She said: "There are at least 20 businesses down here in the west end and they need support."

She defines the west end of the city as the lower end of St Cuthbert Street and Tucker Street to the junction with Strawberry Way. With parking widely considered a problem in Wells, Annabelle believes that the west end is an under-used resource.

If people were encouraged to park in that part of the city they would then walk to the city centre and this would help businesses on the way, she believes.

She said: "There is no sign posting for the car park at the end of Tucker Street. It's half empty most of the time. We need something from the bypass so that people can park there and walk up to the rest of the city."

A Somerset County Council spokesman said: "I'm not aware of the county council receiving any requests for signage to the shops in Tucker Street. However in principle there would be no objection to this.

"We would be guided by the city council as to whether a sign should be provided here but only a generic signage saying 'local shops' would be considered."

When the Journal told Colin Price, chairman of the city centre management committee, about the county's view he said: "I would be happy to write to Somerset and see what could be done."

Do you think enough is being done to support each area of the city? If you have any suggestions for how signage in the city can be improved let us know by writing to Editor, Wells Journal, Southover, Wells, BA5 1UH or emailing editor @midsomnews.co.uk.
