A major clean-up of a popular park is under way after a large group of travellers left rubbish – and worse – in their wake.
The group had been camped at Hamilton Park in Taunton for a week before finally moving on Sunday.
But they left rubbish and what is believed to be human excrement strewn across the grass and in hedges. Taunton Deane Borough Council staff were at the park cleaning up yesterday.
Councillor Mark Edwards, deputy leader of the council, who has been monitoring the situation closely, said: "I am delighted that the travellers have moved on. We immediately sent in a team to clean as much as was practical and make sure the park was secure.
"It was extremely disappointing that they chose to enter the park in the first place, but the state they left it in was completely unnecessary, and the lack of respect for the environment was beyond comprehension."
