Zomerset – aka Team Somerset – ensured plenty of home cheer when the University of Bath once again staged Britain's biggest inter-county team fencing competition. As well as retaining the overall Excalibur trophy, Zomerset fencers won five of the six individual weapons titles during the action-packed event at Founders Hall. With ten teams from across the country taking part, each consisting of at least 18 members, there were almost 3,000 bouts in total over two days. Zomerset's Harriet Dixon was undefeated as she took the women's sabre trophy, with team-mate David Pinto winning the men's category. There was another Zomerset double in the epee, with Louise Andren the women's champion and Philip Marsh beating team-mate Marc Burkhalter in the men's final. Zomerset's Jamie Kenber won the men's foil crown and Cornwall's Yvonne Chart took the women's honours. In the team events, Zomerset's men and women did the double in both the epee and sabre competitions, and were runners-up in the foil. The tournament was started by Bob Southcombe in 1953 and has always been organised by members of Bath Sword Club, with Lynne Bornemisza currently performing the role.
