Two crashes within an hour caused Bank Holiday traffic delays on the M5 motorway near Bridgwater this morning. The entry slip road at junction 23 for the A39 (Bridgwater North) was closed after a lorry overturned. In a separate incident, one lane of the southbound carriageway was closed by junction 24 (the A38 for Bridgwater South) following a crash. Police diversions were put in place while emergency services worked on the overturned lorry at junction 23. Motorists were being diverted through Huntspill and Highbridge on the A38. Firefighters from Bridgwater and Taunton were called to the scene at around 9.45am, along with a heavy rescue vehicle from Middlemoor. The driver of the lorry was trapped in the cab when fire crews arrived. A Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service spokesman said crews removed the windscreen of the lorry and used cutting gear to gain access to the cab and release the injured man. He was then taken to hospital by ambulance. The extent of his injuries are not yet known.
