This year's annual Wells Charity Bridge Tournament has been won by Jenny Cornwell and Ruth Angelinetta. Before entering the tournament Jenny and Ruth had never played together but skill, determination – and some luck with the cards, saw them sweep to the final, overcoming many established partnerships. The final match, against previous winners Rosaleen Gripper and Anne Mitchell, was a marathon four hours long with the result hanging in the balance in the third rubber. The tournament culminated with a Bridge and Tea afternoon enjoyed by 36 players. During a break in play the organisers, Natasha Smith and Janette Norris, announced that more than £800 had been raised this year for the local charity Headway Somerset which supports brain-injured adults. During the ten years the tournament has been running around £9,000 has been raised for local charities. The success of this tournament has been due to the good nature and generosity of participants. Playing friendly bridge enabled new partnerships to flourish and friendships to be established. Rosaleen Gripper thanked the organisers for their work over the years. Although this is the last year of the tournament in this format, the organisers intend to run a Charity Bridge Day to continue to raise funds for local charities.
