Byron Webster: Yeovil Town could have been top of League One by now

Yeovil Town defender Byron Webster believes the Glovers could have been sitting on top of League One had it not been for a six-game winless streak early in the season. Gary Johnson's side lost six games on the bounce during September and early October – and the near-ever-present centre-back admitted the league position could have been even better if they had mirrored recent form. "We were losing games in the early part of the season," Webster said. "If we had gone on a run like we are now, not always been winning but picking up draws, we would probably have been second now. "Plus the games against Crawley and Carlisle – Carlisle, especially, as we were 3-1 up with a minute to go – if we had of won those games we could be sitting top. It is crazy." Yeovil picked up just their second win in eight games at Notts County on Easter Monday, but Webster insists that the positive atmosphere around the club has never faltered. "The atmosphere is the same. Everyone said we were in a bit of a slump, but we have got a good group of lads where everyone is level-headed and not getting worried or complacent or too upbeat, so it is all good," he added. "We obviously do our analysis on other teams but, if we play our own game, we are a match for anyone in this league." The Glovers have five games remaining this season, with their highest-ranked opposition being 12th-placed Crewe, who visit Huish Park later this month. The Somerset side entertain Shrewsbury today and former Northampton defender Webster stated that there is no such thing as any easy game. "A few of the teams we have to play are fighting for their lives at the bottom of the table, so I am sure they will have a point to prove," he said. "In their eyes, and like everyone else says, little old Yeovil were expected to go down, so, to use another cliche, they are all tough games, and they actually are. Carlisle were not on the best of runs, but they stole the points off us, so there are no easy games and we take each one as it comes." Yeovil were indeed many people's favourites for relegation at the beginning of the season, but after losing just two games since the turn of the year, Webster said the Glovers have earned their opposition's respect. "When we played Swindon a few weeks ago, they came and put five in midfield and one up top, so that shows us a bit of respect. "Whichever way it goes, at the end of the day, there are 11 players on the pitch and you have to break them down and score more goals than the opposition, so that is how it goes."
