A Yeovil woman died after a smouldering carpet filled her home with acrid smoke, an inquest has heard.
East Somerset Coroner Tony Williams said it was most likely a cigarette sparked the slow-burning fire at the home of 81-year-old Violet Browning.
Mrs Browning, of Wilton Road, was found dead on April 22 after the alarm was raised by Careline, a personal alarm service.
First on the scene was Mrs Browning's daughter, Tina Marshall, who called the fire service when she saw smoke-blackened windows, the inquest heard.
A fire investigation team came to the conclusion that "the most likely cause of the fire was careless disposal of smoking material causing a slow-burning fire."
Mr Williams recorded a verdict of accidental death caused by smoke inhalation.
