Street traffic safety move 'an accident in making'

A new traffic calming and pavement widening system in Street High Street has been declared "an accident waiting to happen" by one parish councillor.

Councillor Lloyd Hughes said he had been approached by several residents who were concerned that the new chicane was not well-lit and did not have enough signs warning motorists of its existence.

"The problem is that it just isn't very well lit," he said.

"People can't see it until they're almost on top of it.

"It's an accident waiting to happen – someone's going to end up hitting it."

The chicane was put in place as part of a scheme to make the footpath next to The Mullions wide enough for schoolchildren, parents with prams and people on mobility scooters or in wheelchairs.

Street's County Councillor, Terry Napper said he had been pleased with the works, but admitted he believed there was an issue with lighting.

"I've been down there a few times, and the chicane is definitely slowing down the traffic," he said.

"And there's no doubt that the pavement is now wide enough that people can use it safely."

He said he had raised the issue of lighting and signing at the chicane at Somerset County Council and a safety audit was due to be carried out as soon as possible.

What do you think of the wider pavement and the traffic island near The Mullions? Do you think it has made that stretch of road and pavement safer?
