Waitrose building work to begin in Wells after multi-storey car park opens

Wells now has its first multi-storey car park.

As part of the development for the new Waitrose on Whiting Way the 367 space car park opened for business on Monday.

For building work to start on the supermarket the multi-storey needed to be finished.

This is because the new store will be built where the temporary car park stood.

Waitrose are aiming to open the store this summer.

It is not yet clear whether the car park will revert to its original closing time of 10.30pm or will continue closing at 8pm.

The gates started to be locked earlier due to complaints of antisocial behaviour in the car park.

Nearby residents told the police of fireworks, handbrake turns and loud music from the car park causing a disturbance.

Since the opening hours have been reduced there have been no incidents of antisocial behaviour reported on Whiting Way.

Despite this some people were unhappy with losing evening parking.

Mayor of Wells, Maureen Brandon, said: "8pm is a silly time to close a car park. If people arrive at 6pm for a night out in Wells they will be locked in."

So far there have only been a small number of people locked in. They were freed by PCSOs.

No decision has yet been reached about the widening of the road to ease traffic flow.

The original plans included the introduction of a new filter lane for cars coming in and out of the supermarket.

Waitrose no longer wish to widen Whiting Way but want to use a special type of traffic light instead.

City councillors rejected this proposal but it currently rests with district council planners.
