Hugh Sexey Middle School in Blackford has closed not because of snow but fire.
No children or staff are hurt but everyone had to be evacuated when the roof caught fire this morning. The alarm was raised at 10.20am and Cheddar firemen, among others, have been stripping tiles off the roof to find the fire in the roof space.
It is thought the fire is now out and an electrical fault may be to blame. Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue are expected to update later today.
The school is without electricity or telephone but a message on its website asks parents to collect children from the back lanes as soon as possible as the main road is closed.
Initially two fire engines from Cheddar were sent to the school, but an extra four from Burnham-on-Sea and Wells were called for, along with a command vehicle from Street.
Children have been seen buying lunch in the Cheddar Valley wearing their parents' coats as no one was allowed back into the premises.
