Firefighters released a trapped driver as a three-car crash caused traffic mayhem on roads around Yeovil yesterday afternoon.

As heavy snow fell on the town, a Vauxhall Astra, BMW 3 series and a Vauxhall Corsa collided on Lyde Road near the junction with Mudford Road at 4.26pm on Tuesday.

Paramedics attended the scene but no one was seriously injured in the incident.

Police closed off the road and long queues built up down Mudford Road and Combe Street Lane to the Ilchester Road roundabout.

Waiting traffic extended across the roundabout along the whole of Thorne Lane and caused chaos for rush-hour commuters around Abbey Manor and the Houndstone Business Park.

It left many journeys which normally would take only 10 minutes taking more than an hour.

The snowfall brought rush hour gridlock elsewhere around Somerset and Dorset.

A van turned on its side in West Coker Road around 6am today. The road was closed for more than three hours as council workers cleared up an oil spillage.

On Tuesday night cars became stranded in heavy snow on the A37 Dorchester Road to the south of Yeovil.

And accidents on the A303 near Ilminster and at Shepton Mallet on the A37 made getting around difficult on Tuesday evening.

There was no transport available yesterday for Stanchester Academy pupils but the school remained open.

Buckler's Mead Academy, Preston School, and Westfield Academy in Yeovil also opened with some pupils sitting GCSE history exams.

On the A358 at Chard firefighters responded to an incident where a car had rolled on to its roof.

The occupants of the vehicle had managed to get free and firefighters made the area safe.

Somerton and Langport residents were advised not to travel after the Met Office issued severe weather warnings due to the hazardous conditions which brought rush hour gridlock to many places.
