Yeovil flanker Marlie Packer has seen selected to compete for England in next month's IRB Women's Rugby Sevens World Series. The Bristol captain, who last year became a key part of England's XV-a-side game, has been called up to compete in the tournament in Houston, Texas next month. Packer is hoping to impress as she looks to claim a place in England's squad in June's rugby sevens World Cup in Moscow. And the 23-year-old, whose only experience of sevens has come from playing socially, is relishing her switch to the shorter, semi-professional form of the game. Packer said: "It's a whole new challenge, I never once thought about sevens and that I could even be in contention for that 16, let alone now being in contention to go to Russia. "I have always said my long-term goal is to win the XVs World Cup and that was still my long term goal until a few weeks ago. I have had to reset my goals again but this has just opened more doors for me." "It's a once in a life time chance and when it turns into a GB sport later this year there is a chance to challenge to go to the Olympics. With sevens rugby becoming an Olympic sport I think that will push it a lot more and make the 15s game that much bigger as well." Packer flies out to the United States at the end of this month for the round taking place on February 1 and 2. England have been drawn alongside inaugural round winners New Zealand, the Netherlands and Trinidad and Tobago. In an exclusive video interview with Western Gazette sports editor Chris Sweet, Packer reacts to her inclusion in the squad.
