Frome will stage its first triathlon this summer when up to 200 entrants compete over the sprint distance in August. The event, hosted by Frome Triathlon Club, will begin at Frome Sports Centre, where competitors will swim 400m in the pool before taking on a 23km bike ride and 5km run. With a relatively flat route for the run and bike stages, organisers say the race is aimed at novice and first-time triathletes, with age categories ranging from U20s to over-80s. The majority of the marshals and volunteers will be supplied by the triathlon club, whose members have a wealth of experience in the sport. Race organiser Mark Poole, a member of the club, said: "We are really excited by this. This is the perfect platform to introduce one of the fastest growing sports in the UK to potential triathletes in and around Frome. "It's been a long time coming and it's going to take a lot of work by the club as a whole but once August arrives, I'm sure the event will be here to stay. "The guys at Frome Sports Centre couldn't have been more accommodating and without their support, this event would never have happened." As a taster to the main event, Frome Triathlon Club, in partnership with Hot Chilli Tri Club from Trowbridge, are holding two Winter Aquathlons, comprising a swim and a run of various lengths, at the sports centre. The informal events are part of the Damp Dash Race series and the first takes place this Sunday, while the second race is on March 31. Entries can be made on the day, with registration open at 8am before the first swimmers get under way at 9am. Online entry for the Frome Sprint Triathlon will be available later this month at www.frometriclub.co.uk.
