GPs at the new Frome Medical Centre hope a sporting celebrity will agree to officially open the site later this year.

The £10 million centre, next to Frome Community Hospital, opened to patients on Thursday, December 27, and welcomed MP David Heath, representatives from the NHS and the media on Friday last week for a tour of the facilities.

Partner Dr Tina Murray said she hoped there would be an official opening at the end of March but that plans were very much in the early stages.

She said: "We want the centre to be at the heart of the community and with the theme being healthy living, we want to link it with the Olympics success and sport.

"We definitely want someone sporty. But what I want to get across is we don't just want the centre to be a place people come when they are ill. We want it to be a community facility and we are keen for the people of Frome to use the facilities we have on offer.

"We'd like to thank everyone who has supported us through the building process and opening. It is going really well and we are pleased with the feedback we have received so far."

Mr Heath said the centre was a fantastic asset to the town.

He said: "I am absolutely delighted with what started out as an idea some years ago has come to fruition. It is terrific for Frome and a real boost for people."

The centre offers not only GP appointments, there is a pharmacy, a cafe, an operating theatre will open for minor surgeries at the end of January which will accommodate local anaesthetic procedures, opticians Eyetech is offering routine and emergency clinical appointments, and a mental health team is on site.

A chiropracto Ray Jones and homeopath Hele Jones are also based in the centre, as well as a plastic surgeon, who will offer a private and NHS-funded operations, a physiotherapist, podiatrist and a Chinese medicines practitioner.

Managing partners want to bring services back to Frome and have been working very closely with the Shepton Mallet Treatment Centre and Bath's Royal United Hospital to do just that.
