Avonvale U15 5 Wells U15 19

Wells booked their place in the Bristol Combination Plate final with a hard-fought victory at Avonvale in by far the toughest game they have played in some time.

The home side saw the majority of possession in the opening passages but Wells absorbed the pressure. The visitors then pieced together their own attack but Harry saw a penalty drift wide.

Wells did get on the scoreboard first as they attacked from the restart, releasing Alex to touch down in the corner. The conversion was missed, meaning Wells led by five points at the break.

Avonvale began the second half as they had the first, putting Wells on the back foot, although this time they did cross the whitewash. The conversion was missed.

The home side had the momentum and forced themselves over the Wells line four more times but stubborn defence meant they could not ground the ball for tries.

Wells kept their discipline and turned the tide, forcing pressure on the Avonvale line, which led to a try for Matt, converted by Harry.

Both teams continued to battle relentlessly but a clever link up in the backs won the game for Wells. Dan made space to run in a third try, converted by Harry to book his side's place in the final.

Wells will play Chippenham – a team they lost to in the final two years ago – for the silverware.

Cheddar U12 19 Wells U11 19

Two late tries from Thomas Stephens earned Wells a draw in their final game of the year when they travelled to take on an older Cheddar age group.

The home side were first to cross the whitewash, grabbing the lead just before half-time. The conversion was missed.

Wells fought back at the beginning of the second half with a try from Chris Thompson but another off-target conversion kept the scores level.

Cheddar's stronger pack began to give them the upper hand, and they ran in two converted tries to reinforce their dominance.

The visitors stepped up a gear, though, and Stephens forced his way over for a try, converted by Archie Killen.

With just minutes left, Stephens got his hands back on the ball following the kick- off and charged the length of the pitch for his second touchdown. Killen was on target for the extras to earn his side a dramatic draw.

Cheddar U10

Cheddar won both games when they finished 2012 with a home ties against Wells and Burnham.

The hosts dominated from the off in the first game against Wells, leading to tries from Joe Chard and Sam Moger.

Wells picked up the pace in the second half, bringing them a well-earned touchdown, but Cheddar did not lose their cool and Moger and Max Keevil ran in further scores for a 4-1 win.

Burnham started off at a blistering pace in match two and scored an early try. Cheddar struck back, though, with Moger grabbing two tries.

Burnham scored next to restore parity but a touchdown from Keevil put the hosts ahead at the break.

Cheddar raised their game again as the second half got under way and Archie Hill crossed the whitewash but Burnham hit back with another try of their own.

The home side were not to be denied, however, and further touchdowns from Moger and Chard capped a 6-3 success.

Cheddar U8 v Wells U8

Cheddar suffered a narrow defeat before being held to a pulsating draw in a double header with Wells at Sharpham Road.

Wells started quickly in the first game and scored two tries early on before Harrison barged his way over the line for Cheddar.

The visitors then ran in two more touchdowns despite excellent tackling from Oliver and Sam but Cheddar soon launched a comeback.

Harry, Zac and Jack all weaved through the opposition to score, while Harrison grabbed his second try before the break.

Zac was first over the whitewash after the restart before Harrison completed his treble, but Wells ran in several more scores before the final whistle to edge the contest 8-7.

The second game was a much tighter affair, with the lead changing hands several times. Excellent defending by Pax and Matthew forced Wells back and led to Zac opening the scoring for Cheddar.

Oliver soon followed him over the whitewash but Wells came back with a couple of tries of their own.

Zac, Oliver and Harrison all grabbed touchdowns but again the visitors came into it before the break, slipping through to score despite strong tackling from Cheddar.

Stout defending from Sam and Rob kept Wells at bay in the second half. An error allowed Harrison to cross again before the two sides traded further tries.

With the final whistle approaching, the score was tied at 7-7 and only firm defence from Wells denied Cheddar a winner late on.

Cheddar U7 v Wells U7

A new four-a-side format produced a series of entertaining matches between Cheddar and Wells, with the scoresheets continually high.

In the first of six matches Wells came out strongly, scoring twice in quick succession. Will Creaser led Cheddar's response with two tries of his own and was quickly followed over by Ali Salmanca and Jack Crossland.

All of the team impressed, with Ben Stoyles, Madeline French and Eadie Tucknott all contributing to a 5-4 success.

The pattern of tight contests continued throughout the day, with Wells using space to good effect and, had it not been for tenacious tagging from Reef Belcher and Archie Young, things could have been much different.

Matthew Ferris and Matthew Holmes were never far from the action for the hosts, while in the final match Jimmy Clark managed to bag a couple of late touchdowns to secure victory.

Man of the match: Ben Stoyles.
