Bridgwater & Albion 3rd 0 Cheddar Valley 40
Cheddar Valley made it eight Somerset 2 South wins in succession on Saturday when they ran riot against struggling Bridgwater in muddy conditions.
There was little suggestion of what would follow from the opening kick-off, however, with Bridgwater putting the visitors under pressure and almost scoring early on.
Cheddar got themselves in the home side's 22 soon afterwards and Tom Monks found a gap to step past two defenders before scoring under the posts.
After 20 minutes it was clear Cheddar were dominant at the scrum and, on a different day with a different referee, they would have earned several penalties. However, much to their disbelief, none materialised.
The visitors' next try came from Alex Moulton, who crossed following an excellent driving maul from the forwards.
As the first half drew to a close, Cheddar's backs created more line breaks, and after Matt Vaughn, Matty Fear and Jon Smith had all threatened, Monks grabbed his second try of the game, converted by Vaughn to give his side a 21-0 half- time lead.
The deteriorating conditions led to a stop-start second half, and Brendon Chapple did well to control play from the rucks, while Tom Corbet's throws and Ben Cox's dominance in the air allowed Cheddar to dominate lineouts.
Andy Underwood had a strong game, while Liam Cullen and Pete Stott continued their good form of recent weeks.
Ed Bodger also impressed, with strong tackling, line breaks and good distribution, while Huw Stobart went close to scoring on a couple of occasions but just could not get over the whitewash.
Again it was Monks who led Cheddar's charge, though, with a third try capping another outstanding day.
The visitors were able to make several changes after the break and replacement Matt Schafli grabbed a try on his return from injury, cutting in off the wing to score.
The final try of the game came from another replacement, Brad Worthington, who scored with his first touch. Dan Crane had broke from halfway but was tackled just inside Bridgwater's 22, with Worthington on hand to finish in style. Vaughn converted two more tries to take his tally to five on the day.
Cheddar are next in action against Taunton 3rds on Saturday, January 12, when they will look to avenge their only defeat so far this season.
