Derby honours were even in a 1-1 draw between Yate Town and Clevedon Town at Lodge Road, with both goals arriving inside the opening six minutes in Division One South & West of the Evo-Stik Southern League. The draw leaves Yate second from bottom, while Clevedon drop to ninth despite ending their two-match losing streak. It was a typically competitive derby clash, but a lack of quality in the final third meant that goalmouth action was at a premium. Not that it looked that way in a whirlwind opening, with both sides getting on the scoresheet inside the opening 360 seconds. Less than two minutes had elapsed when Yate forward Matt Groves took aim and his shot deflected off a visiting defender to beat goalkeeper Lee Matthews and give the hosts the early advantage. Clevedon levelled inside four minutes, however, former Bristol City midfielder Alex Russell beating a couple of defenders before firing past Josh Dempsey in the home goal. The closest the visitors came to a second goal before the break was when Clayton Fortune struck a low drive that Dempsey did well to keep out. At the other end, Matthews was forced into action when Yate's Mike Bryant sent a diving header goalwards. The second half was beset by wayward shooting and poor final balls as the quality drained out of the game. Clevedon's Ben Murray had the best effort when Dempsey saved his header. Yate are at home to Cinderford in the league tomorrow (7.45pm). Cinderford's game at the weekend was postponed.
